The Empire Strips Back is a unique and daring take on the beloved Star Wars universe, calling forth fans of Luke, Leia, and even the dark side. Presented by FEVR, this LA-based group combines playful burlesque elements with the grandeur of intergalactic adventure for one of the biggest fandoms ever created.

Currently touring across the country, the show impresses with stellar sets, incredible costumes, elaborate props, and hilarious montages that effectively transport the audience to a galaxy far, far away. The dancers—note, NOT strippers—both male- and female-presenting, are undeniably talented, bringing their characters to life with flair, humor, and powerful stage presence.

However, when it comes to the core question of whether this is truly “burlesque,” the answer is a bit murky. Yes, the numbers are inventive and cleverly incorporate the magic of Star Wars, with themes drawn from iconic moments, and there is certainly an emphasis on tease and spectacle. The host plays amiably to the crowd, delivering self-deprecating jokes geared toward the loyal fanbase in attendance.

But here’s the rub: burlesque is defined by the art of the tease—that moment when anticipation builds and a performer reveals just a little more of themselves. In The Empire Strips Back, that moment either doesn’t arrive or is blink-and-you-miss-it. Bright lights flash during final reveals, or full-body suits remain on longer than expected. While there are playful nods and subtle winks to the expected T&A, the absence of a substantial payoff leaves the audience scratching their heads. It calls to mind the wise words of Yoda: “Do or do not. There is no try.”

The performances are full of energy and cheeky charm, but without the traditional “tada” of tatas, the production sometimes feels more like a meticulously choreographed fan tribute than a true vaudeville burlesque experience. It’s undeniably fun and a creative twist for Star Wars fans, but those seeking the classic allure and titillation of traditional burlesque might walk away feeling underwhelmed.

A modest selection of merch is available for purchase, including lightsabers, Twi’lek-adorned T-shirts, and even Wookiee-themed panties. A bar and limited snacks were on hand as well. That said, there was a missed opportunity to fully commit to the theme with a proper cantina-style lounge—though this could vary depending on the venue.

In the end, The Empire Strips Back is a visual spectacle, a quirky homage to Star Wars, and an entertaining mashup of sci-fi and stage performance. While it may not fully deliver on the more risqué promises of its genre, it remains a fun night out for fans looking for something offbeat and intergalactic.
